7 strategies to help you convert an idea into reality

7 strategies to help you convert an idea into reality7 strategies to help you convert an idea into realityBut first, lets address this harsh truthYour idea is probably not as good as you think. This is not an insult to your intelligence. It is an observation of the creatives mindset. We adore our ideas. We care for them. We dwell on them. We obsess over them. We know this one idea will change our life forever. The longer you ruminate on your idea, the mora ignorant you become to your naivet. An idea in the real world looks infinitely less sexy than it does in your perfect brain. My friend once told me of the novel he wanted to writeI dont want to corrupt the purity of this story by rushing it out.Sounds reasonable, right? Except he told me that five years ago. He still has not written Chapter One.I hate when Internet people say just start We both know it isnt that simple.Over the last two years, Ive published over 500 deutsche post ags on various platforms. Some of them are terrible. Som e of them are great. All of them started as ideas at one point. Here are some strategies which continue to help meA) Ruin everything immediatelyThe human ego seems to believe whatever comes out of our mind should be instantly perfect.Artists, in particular, have this problem - we are trying to sort through vague ideas. There is no blueprint, no map. You have a half-finished cup of coffee and a whim.I love what Ira Glass saysYour taste is why your work disappoints you.It takes a while to get to the point where you will be even a little satisfied with your work. Even then, there are iterations - you will spend untold hours doing and re-doing and idea, wanting it to be just right.P.S. - It will never be just rightB) Dead to mePeople sometimes sayI love what you wrote about self-confidence in that postI often sayThanks what did I say?Idea people have a strange paradox. When an idea is new, its all we think about. After the idea reaches reality, it is dead to us.Pour your heart and sou l and blood and guts into your idea. Then, let it die and move on.(See also - Die Every Day)C) BeliefYour ideas are worth implementing.Im telling you that just in case nobody else does.Im telling you that because current culture often makes us feel insignificant.Im telling you that so you can write it down, stick it on your mirror, and read it when you dont feel like moving forward.Im telling you that because its true.D) The breakdownEvery November, around half a million people queue up for what can only be described as an artistic trial by fire.NaNoWriMo - National Novel Writing Month - is a program in which you write a complete novel in 30 days.Heres why it worksThe very goal I want to write a novel is arbitrary. Novels come in all shapes and sizes - how long should yours be? What genre should it be? How much time do you have to spend working on it?The program has grown exponentially largely because of a clear goal and clear subgoals. The Goal 50,000 words - a concrete, measura ble finish line. The Subgoals 1,667 words per day - if you hit this fruchtmark every day, youre ahead. If you miss it, youre behind. When you break your idea down so far the first step is too easy, you win.(Also, a while back Jon Westenberg posted this picture. I found it very helpful.)E) The 30 x 30 x 30 ruleWhen I have a big brand new idea, the first thing I do is work on it for 30 seconds. I do this as soon as possible after I have an idea I think is really good. When I hesitate, the naive idealist takes over. The next day, I do it for 30 more seconds. A whole minute on a new ideaIf I am still interested in an idea after 30 seconds, I put it through the 30-day test. If you can do something for 30 days in a row, its potentially a good fit for you. Many people build their own cages with ideas which they dont have the interest in carrying out.IMPORTANT Its fine to realize an idea isnt right for you, so long as you release any guilt or shame related to quitting. When weve passed the 30- day test, I immediately askIs this something I could do for 30 years? The last part of the 30 x 30 x 30 rule is scary. I am bored after 6 months. How am I supposed to do something for 30 years??But if you plan on a 30-year window, imagine how small the little bumps along the way are. Imagine how patient you would be with your new idea.Imagine if you committed to 30 years, but achieved your desired results in just 5.That happens more often than youd think.See also - Dear Young People Looking for a Career Do This)F) Find friendsF is for friends.JRR Tolkien - Lord of the Rings author - was obviously a phenomenal talent and had an astonishing imagination. But its likely none of his work would have ever been seen were it not for a close friend C.S. Lewis.Tolkien and Lewis went back and forth reading each others work, analyzing and criticizing the dialog, studying the nuance of their craft. Now, even though they are both dead, their work lives on.G) Use the magic wordThe magic word is n o.I hate no. I am very bad at saying it. Hopefully, you are stronger than me.Instead, I say thisI love you, but I cant give you my focus right now.It is not uncommon for people who have big ideas to isolate themselves from the rest of the world. John Sylvan - creator of the Keurig - spent most his time alone in a room testing cup after cup of coffee.(He also got caffeine poisoning during this time. Obsession can be costly).Remember Letter C. If you believe your idea is worth executing, you will have the discipline to prioritize it.H) DJ KhaledA surprising amount of my analogies include Khaled prophet Khaled. Sorry about that. Maybe one day I will find another example of a person who blew up, vanished, resurrected, and became a multi-millionaire through sheer will.Listen to the word of the guruAnother one.In every song, in every snap, in every postAnother one.Another one.Another one. Many people do not execute on their ideas for fear it will be the only good idea they have.Remember this The human mind is infinite - ever seeking and ever connecting. You wont fall short. Theres always more where that came from. This idea you have must make its way to reality. Its time to make room for another one.- - - Learn even more about making your ideas a reality In my new book - The Unstoppable Creative.Sign up here to be the first to know when its available.Thisarticlefirst appeared on Medium.

Are You Ready The Value of Preparing for Meetings

Are You Ready The Value of Preparing for Meetings Are You Ready The Value of Preparing for Meetings How do you prepare for big meetings or presentations? Has that changed over time, or do you have certain routines you always follow? In speaking with many fellow business owners, Ive found that there are a number of preparation tipsthat most entrepreneurs agree will help you put your best foot forward.1. Know Your AudienceWho are you meeting with? Have you done a Google search on them? If you didnt set the agenda, who did and whats on the agenda? Its always best not to be surprised or blindsided at a meeting. The mora you know about the people youre meeting with including their backgrounds, their needs, and how they define success the more productive your discussions will be.2. Eat, Sleep, and Be MerryNothing beats a good nights rest and a full stomach when it comes to meetingpreparation.A warm smile and friendly conversation will go a long way in building rapport and, ultimately, a solid relationship which is the foundation for everything that follows.Of course, you wont be in the mood for chitchat and smiles if youre hungry or tired, will you?If youre in a pinch, grab some coffee and an energy bar before you start. It beats hearing your stomach growl and fighting yawns during a meeting.3. Practice Makes (Almost) PerfectRehearsals arent just for plays. Whether you think of a meeting as a performance or not, its your job to both inform and entertain your audience members.Nobodys perfect, but you should be comfortable enough with your material that it flows naturally and youre not relying on notes during the meeting. You dont want to be reading off a script you want to be having direct, engaging conversations.4. Follow Up and Follow ThroughIf you tell the people you meet with youll get back to them on a particular issue, make sure you actually do it. Keeping promises goes a long way and reinforces the quality image and brand you want to project.Personally, I find that, if I write things down, they get done. Find a system that works for you to make sure you always close the loop in the end.-behauptung steps may seem simple, but youd be amazed how many people dont invest the timeand effortnecessary to get into the heads and hearts of their target audience. You want to leave a lasting impression as a consummate professional you should never let a meeting go to waste especially when it can be a challenge to set one up in the first place. So, take the time you need to be prepared, because even meetings you dont initially think are important may end up putting you in front of people who can help you in the future. Though they might not hire you or buy your product this time, they will remember you for later if you make a great impression, that is.Keep sharpening that axe you never know when youll need it.*Ed. note Plenty of people credit Lincoln with this quote, but its difficult if not impossible to verify whether or not he ever actually said it.

Military Recruiting in New York Citys Times Square

Military Recruiting in New York Citys Times SquareMilitary Recruiting in New York Citys Times SquareBy Lt. j.g. Doug Johnson NEW YORK A guy weighing about 280 pounds walked in here with a loaded gun once, said Marine Corps Recruiter Staff Sgt. Marco Cordero. He sat down and wouldnt leave, said Cordero. He kept saying he was the real 50 Cent, and that he had to lay low from the cops for a while. So, one of the recruiters from the Armed Forces Recruiting Station in Times Square, N.Y., nonchalantly walked out of the recruiting station and across the street to the versicherungsschein station. As the cops surrounded the station and arrested the gun-brandishing visitor, Cordero couldnt help but think to himself, ...only in New York. Located in the heart of New York City, the Times Square Armed Forces Recruiting Station never really has a typical day. Its location and elendoriety make it one of the fruchtwein interesting duty assignments in the Marine Corps. Times Square itself is formed b y the angle of Broadway intersecting 7th Avenue between West 42nd and 47th Streets, though the name also applies to the general surrounding area. The station sits on a small traffic island between Broadway and 7th Ave., and it has the best view of the chaos thats synonymous with Times Square. There isnt a better place to work, said Brooklyn native Gunnery Sgt. Alexander Kitsakos. Kitsakos is a double Centurion (more than 200 enlistees), and he worked on Extended Active Duty as a recruiter in Times Square from 1995 to 1997. Its the crossroads of the world and the most famous recruiting station in the country. Marines have represented the Corps in Times Square since the building opened in 1946. The Corps is careful with who they give that responsibility to. The type of person we put in Times Square has to be positive, said Sgt. Maj. Fenton Reese, Recruiting Station New York. You have to have one really positive attitude and a great image. Image is everything, said Reese. Recruiters lo ok good anyway -but for Times Square we need a razor-sharp Marine who can also deal with the public, he said. There are people there of all races and nationalities, and its very fast-paced. We need a Marine who can relate to all of them. Cordero has represented the Corps for two years. With 1st Marine Corps Districts Recruiter of the Year title under his belt, hes done his share of relating. You have to deal with a lot of people here, with a lot of different personalities and backgrounds, said Cordero. Ive learned how to deal with all of them. The diversity comes from the fact that not all of the applicants are from the immediate surrounding area. The contracts from Times Square come from all over, said Staff Sgt. Amanda Hay, RS New York Marketing and Public Affairs Representative. Theres only been a couple of contracts from Times Square that were actually from midtown Manhattan. Brooklyn native Pavel Sanchez is one of the many applicants from another borough who traveled to Times S quare. My friend told me about the station...so I decided to come out here, he said. Sanchez enlisted in the Delayed Entry Program in January, and he leaves for boot camp in March. The Marine Corps isnt the only recruiting presence in the square. The 520-square-feet station is also home to a recruiter from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Each recruiter has one cubicle, which, along with a small bathroom in the back of the station, is about all the station has room for. The station, which the recruiters call the booth, was renovated in 1998 and rededicated in 1999. For more than fifty years before the rededication, the recruiters didnt even have a bathroom. You had to make friends very quickly in order to use the bathroom, said Kitsakos, who left just before the renovation. He and the other recruiters made friends at a nearby theaterand they would walk down the gruppe to use the restroom there. But, some things never changed. The recruiters from all of the services really worked toget her, he said. If one of the recruiters had an applicant come in for anything, another recruiter would help out if the applicants recruiter wasnt there. Seven years after Kitsakos worked at the station, Cordero said the teamwork between the services is still the highlight of working there. What makes this fun is that we all get along, said the Washington Heights, N.Y., native. If Im not here and someone walks in to find out more about the Marines, then whoever is here will sit down and talk to him about the Marines. Were all in one room here, and we work with each other every day, said Army Staff Sgt. Dennis Kelly. So its easy to just work together. Both realize that the same teamwork may not apply at other recruiting stations, but it works well for them. All four of the recruiters in the small Times Square station earned Recruiter of the Year titles. Working in a station thats so well known has its ups and downs. The visibility the recruiters get from the public is both good and bad , said Hay. Famous music artists, modelsand actors visit the station unannounced. Even P. Diddy was here hanging out with us in front of the station one day, said Kelly. Other visitors are less welcome. Anti-war protesters have targeted the station in the past. The protesters dont really affect the recruiters...its just business as usual, said Hay. Actually, protests offer an opportunity for the recruiters to show off how well they relate to different people. During one protest, people handcuffed themselves to the flag pole, said Cordero. So, once they were handcuffed, I went out and handed my business card out to their free hands. According to RS New York operational statistics, the RS contracted more than 1,300 applicants last fiscal year. A significant portion of those contracts come from Manhattan, said Reese. We couldnt sustain our mission without Manhattan. The location of the station combined with hard work provides those numbers. Theres always a lot of traffic there, said Kit sakos. Combining the walk-ins with plenty of good, old-fashioned, area canvassing can make a recruiter competitively successful. The same factors that can make a day successful also create an intense atmosphere. Its like Wall Street in here sometimes, said Cordero. Theres so much to handle in such little time. For Marines willing to handle the pressure of recruiting in Times Square, Hay said the challenge is worth it. The recruiters get lots of VIP status and visits from famous people. I would say Times Square is the most exciting place to beasa Marine.
